Digital Product Passport — frequently asked questions

Straight answers on the EU battery passport, the ESPR roll-out and how Origopass works.

When is the EU battery passport mandatory?

From 18 February 2027. Every LMT battery, EV battery and industrial battery over 2 kWh placed on the EU market from that date must have a digital battery passport reachable via a QR code on the battery. Read more →

Who is responsible for the battery passport?

The economic operator placing the battery on the EU market — typically the manufacturer or importer. The obligation cannot be transferred to a software supplier; a platform such as Origopass provides the infrastructure, while the operator remains the responsible party. Read more →

What data must a battery passport contain?

Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 lists the required attributes: manufacturer identity, battery model and serial, chemistry and composition, carbon footprint, recycled content, performance and durability data, hazardous substances, and end-of-life information — split into publicly accessible data and data restricted to authorised parties. Is battery passport data public?

Partly. General product, composition, carbon footprint and circularity information is publicly accessible by scanning the QR code. Detailed technical data is restricted to authorised parties such as market-surveillance authorities, notified bodies, repairers and recyclers, under the access rules of Article 77. Read more →

Does every individual battery need its own passport?

Yes. The passport is per battery unit, identified by its unique serial number, even though most attributes are shared by all units of the same model. Practical systems store model data once and attach per-unit data such as serial number, production date and state of health. Read more →

What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?

A Digital Product Passport is a structured, machine-readable record of a product's identity, materials, environmental footprint and circularity information, accessible through a data carrier such as a QR code on the product. It is introduced for batteries by Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and extended to other product groups by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Read more →

Which products will need a Digital Product Passport?

Batteries first, from 18 February 2027. Under ESPR, priority groups include textiles and apparel, consumer electronics and ICT, iron and steel, aluminium, furniture, tyres, detergents, paints and chemicals — each activated by its own delegated act with its own timeline. Read more →

What does the QR code on a battery link to?

It resolves to the battery's digital passport: a web page showing the publicly accessible attributes for that specific unit, with restricted data available to authorised parties. The link must keep working for the battery's entire life, including second life and recycling. Read more →

Can we print QR labels before the product data is ready?

Yes, and in production it is usually necessary. Reserve passport identifiers in advance, print the codes, and activate each passport with its data later. A scanned but not-yet-activated code should show a clear "not yet activated" message rather than an error page. Read more →

Is Origopass itself "compliant" with the Battery Regulation?

No platform can be. Compliance rests with the economic operator placing the battery on the market. Origopass provides the infrastructure that makes your compliance demonstrable: the required data structure, permanent QR data carriers, versioned records and a cryptographically verifiable audit trail.

How does Origopass prove records were not altered?

Every record is appended to a hash-chained, Ed25519-signed ledger. The public integrity check re-computes the whole chain live, and signed checkpoints can be stored by anyone — auditors, customers, authorities — so any later change to history would be provable.

What does Origopass cost?

No setup fee for an unbranded environment; a one-time fee of EUR 1,000 for full branding. After that you pay per active QR code in bundles, with lower prices for larger bundles and longer terms (1, 3, 5 or 10 years).
