Model data versus unit data
Nearly every practical mistake in battery passport projects starts here. Most attributes — chemistry, dimensions, carbon footprint, recycled content — are identical for every unit of a model. A few are unique per unit: serial number, manufacturing date, and everything about the individual battery's condition.
Model the shared data once per product (SKU) and the rest per unit. Registering a battery then means entering a serial number and a date, not re-typing forty fields — and correcting a model-level mistake does not require touching thousands of units.
The field list, group by group
1. Identity and market placement
Manufacturer name and address, battery model and category, serial or batch number, manufacturing date, manufacturing place, date placed on market, producer (EPR) registration number, warranty.
2. Performance and durability
Rated capacity (Ah) and rated energy (kWh), nominal voltage, rated cycle life with the conditions under which it was measured (depth of discharge, temperature, charge and discharge rates), maximum and recommended charge and discharge currents, peak discharge current, round-trip efficiency, operating temperature range, protection degree, dimensions, weight, terminal type.
3. Composition and hazardous substances
Chemistry, and a substance list with CAS and EC numbers and mass percentages — a table, not a sentence. Critical raw materials, substances of concern with their hazard classification, mixture classification, and a statement on Annex I restrictions.
4. Carbon footprint
Total carbon footprint per kWh, ideally broken down by raw material acquisition, manufacturing, distribution and end of life. Performance classes are due from a delegated act; until then, declare the figure and its basis.
5. Recycled content
Post-consumer shares of cobalt, lithium, nickel and lead. Zero is a valid answer — LFP chemistry contains no cobalt or nickel — but it should be stated as zero rather than left blank.
6. Circularity and end of life
Separate-collection statement, European List of Waste classification, dismantling and safe-removal instructions, spare parts availability, second-life declaration.
7. Documents
Declaration of conformity, test reports, safety data sheet, performance documentation. Link them — and, ideally, seal a cryptographic fingerprint of each file so nobody can quietly swap a document later.
Empty is better than invented
Where a manufacturer has not declared a value, leave the field empty and say so. A passport padded with placeholder numbers is worse than an honest gap: market-surveillance authorities can check declarations, and an unverifiable claim is a liability that follows the product for fifteen years.

Is battery passport data public?
Partly. General product, composition, carbon footprint and circularity information is publicly accessible by scanning the QR code. Detailed technical data is restricted to authorised parties such as market-surveillance authorities, notified bodies, repairers and recyclers, under the access rules of Article 77.
Does every individual battery need its own passport?
Yes. The passport is per battery unit, identified by its unique serial number, even though most attributes are shared by all units of the same model. Practical systems store model data once and attach per-unit data such as serial number, production date and state of health.
